What is Telepsychiatry ?

Telepsychiatry is a subset of telemedicine, that specializes in delivering mental health treatment with the help of technology. Primarily telepsychiatry uses an interactive audiovisual real-time platform such as Zoom or other equivalents.

Telepsychiatry can be used for initial evaluations, consults, providing ongoing care, and prescribing medications.

At this time SynergyMDPsychiatry offers Telepsychiatry services only.

In most cases , the answer is yes. However, there are a few exceptions- such as if you have a condition that requires treatment with a controlled substances. Controlled substances are highly regulated and require that the physicians meet the patients in person in order to prescribe these medications. This is governed by a federal law Ryan Haight Act.

Cons of Telepsychiatry

  • Requires that patients have access to Internet broadband & smartphone or computer
  • Connection may be hindered during bad weather or other interference
  • Not for everyone – patients with dementia, younger children & those with certain learning or other disability may hinder treatment effectiveness
  • Limited Human contact – some patients may miss this
